We regularly invite an inspiring speaker to give a masterclass. These are about very different facets of the wine world. With this we offer our students a broadening of their knowledge and we can also discuss topics that do not appear in the WSET or WSG curriculum.

On Sunday afternoon January 15 from 3-6 pm we welcome Harold Hamersma for a masterclass on wine writing. Harold is the most famous Dutch wine writer and has an impressive series of publications on his name.
Under his inspiring leadership, we discuss how you can bring a tasting note to life with words. But we also look at what the bottle and the label tell us. And of course wine will be tested and discussed. This time it will be a very dynamic masterclass with a lot of interaction. Ideally suited for WSET students who would like to write and talk about wine in a different, more lively way.

Due to the very enthusiastic reactions to Sietze Wijma's first masterclass, we will receive him for the second time on Friday evening 10 February from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm for 'the Art of Tasting'. The masterclass in November '22 focused on white wines. This time it's about recognizing aromas in red wines.
Sietze has a master's degree in Sensory Science and gives many tastings at the WSET wine school in London and now also with us in Amsterdam for the second time.
Under the guidance of Sietze we taste the same neutral basic wine 11 times. An aroma that we regularly encounter in wine has been added to 10 of these samples. Think of the green pepper in a cabernet sauvignon, but also of the smell that you recognize 'cork'. Sietze explains where these aromas come from and in which wines you can expect them.
This is the ideal masterclass for students preparing for the WSET level 3 tasting exam, but also very suitable for other wine enthusiasts who would like to learn how to taste better.

About Trinks-Trinks
Johanna Döring and Matthias Fridel are both lecturers at the University of Geisenheim. Their field of expertise is research with a focus on organic viticulture. In 2009 they bought a dilapidated weingut in Geisenheim and renovated it. The family that sold the weingut also owned a small area of vineyard. These vineyards had been in the family for over 100 years. Until 1970, wine was also made in the weingut with grapes from these vineyards. As teachers at the renowned wine university, Johanna and Matthias could not resist the temptation and in 2013 they also took over the vineyards. In 2014 they made their first crop there. The surface of only 1.2 hectares is spread over various plots in and around Geisenheim. They work completely organically and all work in the vineyard is done by hand. The grapes from the different plots are vinified separately. At Trinks-trinks, only Riesling wines are made.
Through controlled oxygen supply, slow fermentation and long contact with the yeasts, characteristic and powerful wines are created. The wines are bottled at the earliest in the summer after the harvest and are then aged for at least 2 months in the bottle. The wines have their own character and aging potential.
